Events
- January 29th : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart takes part in the successful world premiere of his Opera seria Idomeneo (KV 366). Then he travels to Vienna.
- June 8th : After previous violent disputes with Archbishop Hieronymus Franz Josef von Colloredo , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart resigns from his Salzburg service, settles in Vienna and earns his living there through concerts in private and public academies.
- October 12 : The first bagpipe competition in Scotland takes place in Falkirk .
- The Leopoldstadt Theater , designed by Jean-Baptiste Brequin and master builder Peter Mollner , is the first Viennese suburban theater to open.
- The libretto Belmont and Constanze published in Leipzig , or Die Entführung aus dem Serail by Christoph Friedrich Bretzner , which is reworked and expanded by Johann Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is the basis for the libretto of Mozart's next opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail .
Operas and other stage works
- Jan. 29 : At the Munich Residenz Theater is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Idomeneo premiered in presence of the composer with success. The famous tenor Anton Raaf sings his last title role here. Mozart called the opera his best all his life.
- 25 February : The opera La fedeltà premiata ( The rewarded loyalty ) by Joseph Haydn is premiered in Esterház .
- April 21 : The premiere of the opera Elisa by Johann Gottlieb Naumann takes place at the Small Electoral Theater in Dresden .
- April 30th : The German-language opera Der Rauchfangkehrer or The indispensable betrayers of their lords by Antonio Salieri premieres at the Burgtheater in Vienna with Catarina Cavalieri and Ludwig Fischer in the leading roles. The libretto of Leopold Auenbrugger is strongly criticized, but Salieri's music is received with enthusiasm.
