- May 24th : Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch founds the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin , the world's first mixed choir. This is the starting point of mixed choir singing and the Bach renaissance in the 19th century .
Instrumental and vocal music (selection)
- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart : Ave verum ; Clarinet Concerto , KV 622 , his last completed instrumental work; on November 18, the composer completed his last work, the Little Masonic Cantata , KV 623, while he was bedridden. After his death, his widow Constanze offered his pupil Joseph von Eybler to complete the Requiem , a commissioned work for Count Franz von Walsegg , which he had begun , and was finally completed by Franz Xaver Süßmayr .

- January 14th : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composes the piano song Sehnsucht nach dem Frühling ( Come, dear May, and do ) KV 596 based on the text by Christian Adolph Overbeck .
- March 19 : Premiere of the opera Camille ou Le Souterrain by Nicolas Dalayrac in Paris (Comédie Italienne)
- March 27 : The first performance of the opera Les Deux Sentinels of Henri Montan Berton takes place at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
- March 30th : Premiere of the opera La dama soldato by Johann Gottlieb Naumann in Dresden
- April 9 : World premiere of the opera Guillaume Tell by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry in Paris (Comédie-Italienne)
- June 16 : World premiere of the opera La locanda by Giovanni Paisiello in London.
- July 30th : The opera The Surrender of Calais by Samuel Arnold premieres at the Little Theater in London.
- September 6th : The world premiere of the opera La clemenza di Tito ( The Mildness of Titus ) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart takes place on the occasion of Emperor Leopold II's coronation as King of Bohemia in the Prague Estates Theater . The libretto is by Caterino Mazzolà based on a model by Pietro Metastasio .
- September 30th : The world premiere of the opera Die Zauberflöte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart based on the libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder takes place at the Freihaustheater in Vienna.
- October 10 : Premiere of the opera Agnès et Olivier by Nicolas Dalayrac in Paris (Comédie Italienne)
- December 28 : Premiere of the opera Philippe et Georgette by Nicolas Dalayrac in Paris (Comédie Italienne)
