In 1890 Palmer was incorporated as a city. In 1902, the Palmer Press Brick Company was founded in the city. By the end of World War I , Palmer had 750 residents, two banks and more than 40 other stores. Thereafter, the population of Palmer fell sharply , also exacerbated by the Great Depression in the late 1920s, until it reached its low point in 1970 with 601 inhabitants.
