Johann Gottlob Töpfer (born December 4, 1791 in Niederroßla ; † June 8, 1870 in Weimar ) was a German organ building theorist , organ expert , organist , teacher and composer . From 1804 to 1808 Töpfer was a student at the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium in Weimar . In 1830 he was appointed organist of the St. Peter and Paul Church in Weimar. He held this position until his death, even if in 1844 he asked for his dismissal because of unreasonable working conditions; however, he later withdraws the application. Töpfer is valued by his contemporaries as a virtuoso and organ expert . Among other things, there is a relationship of mutual respect for Franz Liszt .

More than 400 works have survived as compositions, most of which are chorale preludes for the organ . The historical significance of Potter, however, lies in his publications on organ building. His formulas for the scaling of organ pipes still serve organ builders today as a basis for calculation.
