Herman-François Delange

Herman-François Delange (born June 2, 1715 in Liège ; † October 27, 1781 there ) was a Belgian violinist and composer of the pre-classical period .

Life

Herman-François Delange began his musical training as a choirboy at the Liège Collégiale Saint-Martin-en-Mont from 1723. He then attended the Jesuit college, where he received violin lessons from François Grétry, André Grétry's father . Thanks to his talent, he received a scholarship from the Darchis Foundation, which enabled him to spend several years in Italy from 1741, mainly at the Liège College in Rome . Here he studied fugue theory and counterpoint with Giovanni Battista Costanzi before he presumably traveled on to Naples.

Back in Liège, Delange was employed as a violinist at his former training facility. From 1762 until his death in 1781 he was a violinist at St. Paul's Cathedral . Delange was one of the most important composers in the Principality of Liège around the middle of the 18th century.

His solo sonatas Op. 1 show the influence of Giuseppe Tartini , especially in the double fingerings of the violin and the rich ornamentation . The trio sonatas, on the other hand, are set more simply, possibly they were aimed at wealthy music lovers.

While his sacred compositions fell into oblivion, the gallant, melodious and pleasing overtures are occasionally performed.
