Anton Zimmermann (composer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anton Zimmermann (* around December 25, 1741 in Breitenau , Silesia ; † October 1781 in Pressburg ) was an Austrian composer of the pre-classical period .

Life

Zimmermann probably received his musical training in his Silesian homeland. He had a position as organist at the cathedral in Königgrätz . From 1772 he worked in Pressburg. In 1776 Zimmermann was given a permanent position as a “princely court composer” in the service of the Prince-Bishop and Primate of Hungary, Count József Batthyány . In 1780 he became the cathedral organist. Two of Zimmermann's symphonies have long been attributed to Joseph Haydn , presumably this was done by the oboist of the Esterhazy Orchestra, who worked in Pressburg for a year and dedicated the oboe solos to Zimmermann. The C major symphony was printed under Haydn's name in 1939.
