Piano sonatas op.30 (Haydn)
The six piano sonatas Hob .XVI: 35–39 and Hob.XVI: 20, composed by Joseph Haydn , were published in 1780 as Haydn's Opus 30 under the title Six Sonatas for Harpsichord and Pianoforte with a dedication to Katharina and Marianne Auenbrugger .
History of origin
In 1780 (after Op. 13 and Op. 14) a third collection of Joseph Haydn's piano sonatas was published as Op. 30. They were published by Artaria , who also added the dedication to Katharina and Marianne Auenbrugger. Haydn had no objections to the dedicatee, but complained about the publisher's arbitrariness. The Auenbrugger sisters were piano students from Haydn, and Haydn appreciated their playing skills: “ The applause of their Freilen v. Augenbrugger is the most important to me because your spielarth and Ächte insight into the art of music equals that of the greatest masters: Beede deserve to be made known throughout Europe through public papers. “(Letter to Artaria, 1780) In contrast to the two previous collections of piano sonatas, whose title was explicitly intended for the harpsichord , Haydn also envisaged the fortepiano as an instrument in his sonatas op. 30 .
While sonatas nos. 1-5 were written at the end of the 1770s or not until 1780, the compositional history of the C minor sonata dates back to 1771. Haydn worked on the first and third movements of the sonata that year, but only completed the third movement. The first movement remained a fragment until it was revised and completed on the occasion of the publication of the Sonata Collection Opus 30. Haydn also composed a slow second movement.

Discography
CD recordings of the piano sonatas published in 1780 were usually made as part of complete recordings of all of Haydn's piano sonatas. It is noticeable that in the CD compilations the sonata Hob.XVI: 20 is mostly to be found separately from the other five. Among the complete recordings, Christine Schornsheim's (Capriccio 49404) should be mentioned, as it also contains a recording of the fragmentary early version of the first movement of Hob.XVI: 20.
