Hoboken directory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hoboken directory is the most common catalog of works by Joseph Haydn . The exact title is: J. Haydn, Thematic-Bibliographical Catalog of Works . It was created by the Dutch musicologist Anthony van Hoboken and was published in three volumes from 1957 to 1978. Numbers according to the Hoboken directory are generally identified by the letters Hob . In contrast to the Köchel directory of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's works or the German directory of Franz Schubert's works , the Hoboken directory is not sorted chronologically, but rather according to work groups. The reason is that a cross-group chronology for Haydn's work cannot be established. Even within the individual work groups, it is often not possible. The sequence of the symphonies in Hoboken is chronologically correct only in parts. An order according to opus numbers was ruled out as a criterion for the arrangement, since the opus numbers naturalized for individual works do not go back to Haydn, but to publishers.

Even if the Hoboken directory is now partially outdated by new research findings, it has retained great practical importance, especially since almost all CD recordings and concert programs use this numbering.
