Heinrich Zimmermann (born October 25, 1741 in Wiesloch , † May 3, 1805 in Starnberg ) took part in James Cook's last trip .

Life

The trained carpenter from Gürtler left his home in the Electorate of the Palatinate early on. First of all, he went to Geneva . From there he went to Lyon and later to Paris . In 1776 he came to London . There he heard of Cook's preparations for a new voyage of discovery, the search for a northwest passage from Asia to Europe . On the spur of the moment, he signed on as a seaman .

Despite the strictest prohibition on the part of the English Admiralty, Zimmermann made notes during the four-year journey, which he published after his return to Germany in 1781 under the title Heinrich Zimmermanns von Wissloch in der Pfalz, Reise um die Welt, with Captain Cook . Because of the success of the book, Elector Karl appointed Theodor Zimmermann as “Elector's Body Ship Master”.

In 1787 Zimmermann went on a two-year trip to East Asia , during which he visited China and Bengal .
