Ignaz Umlauf

Ignaz Umlauf (also Umlauff ; born August 21, 1746 in Kirchberg am Wagram , Lower Austria ; † June 8, 1796 in Meidling near Vienna ) was an Austrian composer, violist and conductor.

Life

Umlauf, who received his musical training from Antonio Salieri , among others , was a violist in the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra from 1772. In 1778 he celebrated a great success with the premiere of his Singspiel Die Bergknappen on the occasion of the opening of the "German National Singspiel" initiated by Emperor Joseph II. In 1782 he took over the training of the singing boys of court music, in 1783 he became a substitute for Salieris in the newly founded Italian opera ensemble. From 1789 he had to represent court conductor Salieri in his absence and in 1790 he traveled to Frankfurt as a member of the court music for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II. He belonged to the inner circle around Gottfried van Swieten and also met Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart hereknow, with whom he made music and, for example, performed Handel's Messiah . Shortly before his death, Umlauf was appointed music teacher to the young archduke.

Umlauf is considered to be one of the most important musical composers of the second half of the 18th century, among his numerous works the following are to be mentioned in particular:
