Carl Christian Agthe

Carl Christian Agthe (born June 16, 1762 in Hettstedt ; † November 27, 1797 in Ballenstedt ) was a German composer and organist .

Life

Coming from a family of musicians, he took up the post of court organist and court conductor at the court of the Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg in 1782 . The then Prince Friedrich Albrecht zu Anhalt-Bernburg became his musical patron. After the court had moved to Ballenstedt, he followed and resumed his previous offices. A court theater was established in his new place of work in 1787 . Agthe was responsible for numerous works that were performed there. He worked at the Ducal Court Theater until his death at the age of 35.

Agthe was a prolific composer. His compositional work includes primarily operas , dramas , concerts, libretti and songs . He mainly set songs and poems by important poets of classical German literature to music . Some of his works were destroyed in the Second World War .

His son was the composer Wilhelm Agthe .
