Filippo Taglioni
Filippo Taglioni (born November 5, 1777 in Milan , † February 11, 1871 in Como ) was an Italian dancer, ballet master and choreographer .
Life
Taglioni was the son of the grotto dancer and ballet master Carlo Taglioni, who worked in Pisa, and his wife Maria Petracchi. His work extends mainly to Italy, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and France.
Filippo made his debut in 1794 at the age of 17 in Pisa, where he first appeared in female roles. From 1799 he studied with Jean-François Coulon (1764-1834) in Paris, where he danced in ballets by Louis Milon and Pierre Gardel . In 1803 he became the first dancer and ballet master in Sweden. There he married Sophie Karsten, a daughter of the opera singer Christopher Karsten, in 1804. The marriage produced two children, Marie Taglioni (1804-1884) and Paul Taglioni (1808-1884), both of whom became famous dancers. In 1805 Filippo was employed as a ballet master for life at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna.
In 1821, Taglioni's wife and two children moved from Paris to Vienna. Disappointed with her training, Filippo trained her for six hours a day for half a year by completing a gradual training session with her. From 1822 he used his daughter in his own choreographies, mostly as a partner in numerous pickled pas de deux.
In June 1824 the Taglionis performed for the last time in Vienna. In 1824 Filippo was hired in Stuttgart, where he founded a “Compagnie Taglioni” consisting largely of Viennese dancers.
In 1827 his daughter made her debut in Paris. She was soon so popular there that Taglioni was able to negotiate a six-year contract for him and her. The success at the premiere of the ballet “ La Sylphide ” on March 12, 1832 made her the most sought-after prima ballerina and him the most famous choreographer of her time. Both then traveled and performed throughout Europe as far as Russia.
In old age he became eccentric and, through speculation, lost a large part of the fortune that he had earned together with his daughter Marie. He died in his daughter's villa in Como on Lake Como .
