Sebastian Klotz

Sebastian (I.) Klotz , also Sebastian Cloz, Kloz, Khlotz (born January 18, 1696 in Mittenwald , Upper Bavaria; † January 20, 1775 ibid) was an important violin maker in Mittenwald from the Klotz family .

Life

Sebastian Klotz was the child of the weaver's daughter Maria Seiz and Matthias Klotz , the founder of violin making in Mittenwald. He learned violin making from his father. Sebastian Klotz's violin making style was the model of the Mittenwald school of violin making until after 1800. His model aesthetic, the so-called Klotz model , lies between that of Jakob Stainers and Amatis . Typical are medium-high bulges, wide bulges, flat fillets and sculptural edge work. The characteristic paint is thin and deeply colored brown. Anton and Andreas Gäßler and Johann Georg Psenner were among his students.

In 1724 he married Maria Rosina Mayr (around 1704–1770) from Rovereto . They had eleven children, including the later violin makers Georg (II.) Karl, Aegidius Sebastian and Joseph (I.) Thomas. Aegidius Klotz is considered to be the ancestor of the German violin making tradition of the 19th century, as he took over the model aesthetics of Jakob Stainer . The violin manufacture still exists today and is in the seventh generation.
