Aegidius Klotz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aegidius Sebastian Klotz (* 1733 in Mittenwald , Upper Bavaria, † 1805 ibid) was an important violin maker in Mittenwald from the Klotz family .

Life

Aegidius Klotz was one of 11 children of Maria Rosina Mayr (around 1704–1770) from Rovereto and the famous violin maker Sebastian Klotz . He learned violin making from his father. Aegidius Klotz is considered to be the ancestor of the German violin making tradition of the 19th century, as he took over the model aesthetics of Jakob Stainer . What is striking about his instruments are the transparent lacquer and the elegantly shaped scroll. The "Mittenwalderin", a violin from the personal possession of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , is attributed to Aegidius Klotz. Klotz's violin manufacture still exists today and is in the seventh generation.
