Barbucca diabolica ( devil loach ) is a very small, loach-like freshwater fish that is found in Southeast Asia, in the Malaysian state of Johore and in western Borneo , in the Kapuas river basin .

features

Barbucca diabolica becomes 2.3 cm long and has a typical, elongated loach shape . The species shows six broad, brown, vertical bands on the sides of the body, which are separated from each other by narrow, slightly inclined and golden-colored stripes. The dorsal and anal fin are colorless, the basal section of the caudal fin has vertical bars. The paired fins are dark at their base, otherwise colorless. The pelvic fins are large and lie below the dorsal fin, which is almost in the middle. The scales are relatively large and thin. The scale formula is SL 45-50.

The morphology of the mouth and the swim bladder distinguishes Barbucca diabolica from all other loaches. The upper lip is fleshy, smooth, and without a central notch. The lower lip is fused with the upper lip, fleshy and divided in the middle. On the lower lip there is a fleshy, whisker-like , triangular lobe, with a soft, thin, flattened outgrowth that is perpendicular to the body. Two other pairs of barbels can be found on the rostrum, one on the maxillary . The mustaches are relatively thick but short. Their length is smaller than the diameter of the eye. The barbels at the corners of the mouth extend to the middle of the eyes. The manubrium, a connecting tube between the two rear parts of the swim bladder, which is present in the brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), flat loaches (Balitoridae), Gastromyzontidae , Serpenticobitidae and Ellopostomatidae , is missing.

Systematics

Barbucca diabolica was described in 1989 by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts and was the only species of the genus Barbucca until 2013 . The species epithet diabolica (= "devilish") was given because of the bright red eyes and the spiky tail of the species. In 2013, another species was described with Barbucca elongata .

Way of life

Barbucca diabolica lives in small rainforest rivers and feeds on small invertebrates, algae and detritus .
