Barbucca is a genus of very small, loach-like freshwater fish thatonly includes a few speciesandoccursin the Mekong basin in Southeast Asia and on the Vietnamese island of Phú Quốc .
features
The morphology of the mouth and swim bladder distinguishes Barbucca from all other loach species. The upper lip is fleshy, smooth, and without a central notch. The lower lip is fused with the upper lip, fleshy and divided in the middle. On the lower lip there is a fleshy, whisker-like , triangular lobe, with a soft, thin, flattened outgrowth that is perpendicular to the body. Two other pairs of barbels can be found on the rostrum, one on the maxillary . All barbels are surrounded by a ring of small protrusions at their base. The manubrium, a connecting tube between the two rear parts of the swim bladder, which is present in the brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), flat loaches (Balitoridae), Gastromyzontidae , Serpenticobitidae and Ellopostomatidae , is missing.
Systematics
The genus Barbucca was established in 1989 by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts with the description of Barbucca diabolica and was initially monotypical . The generic name Barbucca is derived from Latin ("barba, -ae" = beard, "bucca" = mouth) and refers to the mouth surrounded by barbels. In the first description, the genus was assigned to the wolffish (Cobitidae), later by Šlechtová et al. the flat loaches (Balitoridae). In 2012, Kottelat established the Barbuccidae family for the genus. In 2013, another species was described with Barbucca elongata .
species
- Barbucca diabolica Roberts, 1989
- Barbucca elongata , Vasil'eva & Vasil'ev, 2013
The two species differ in their coloration, the scale formula , the shape of the snout and the relationship between body height and length. In addition to the two previously described, several previously undescribed species are also known.
