Antonio Gaetano Pampani
Antonio Gaetano Pampani , also Pampino or Pampini (* around 1705 in Modena , † December 1775 in Urbino ) was an Italian conductor, opera and oratorio composer.
life and work
Pampani appears as a musician in the sources for the first time on July 18, 1729, when he was nominated for the post of Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Fano , which he was unable to take on because of his simultaneous engagements at the Urbino Opera. From 1730 he worked occasionally with the Teatro del Sole in neighboring Pesaro . In 1734 he finally went to Pesaro as opera director, where he worked until 1737. During this time he went to Venice twice to perform two of his operas. In 1746 he became a member of the renowned Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna . From this point on he devoted himself primarily to the composition of operas (“opere serie”) that were performed in Venice , Rome, Milan and Turin. From 1747 to the 1960s he taught as “Maestro di coro” at one of the four great Venetian music schools, the Ospedaletto , and composed oratorios and psalms for its concerts. In December 1767 he was appointed Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Urbino, but did not take up the position until July after he had completed work on his last opera, Demetrio , composed for a Venetian opera house , which premiered in May 1768. Pampani died in Urbino in December 1775, his successor as cathedral music director was Giuseppe Gazzaniga .
