The Duomo of Fano or the Cathedral of the Assumption ( Italian Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta ) is a church in Fano in the Italian region of Marche . The cathedral of the diocese of Fano-Fossombrone-Cagli-Pergola bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The current cathedral was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style on the site of an earlier church that was destroyed by fire in 1124, which was called the main church of Fano "Santa Maria la Maggiore". The new cathedral was built under Bishop Rainaldo (1136–1159) by Master Rainerio and presumably consecrated around 1140.

The new building received three naves that ended in three apses , and a crypt was created under the choir . In the 16th century the two side apses were converted into chapels, while the central apse was enlarged; at the same time the crypt was torn down and the choir was lowered. The eight side chapels of the nave, which were built in the 14th century, were reduced to six in the 20th century by opening two side entrances. The bell tower is a more recent work as the previous one was demolished by the Germans during World War II. The belfry carries five bells that were cast in 1965.

architecture

The facade is best showing the original Romanesque design, largely thanks to the restoration work carried out in the 1920s. It is divided into three parts and has a gable profile. False loggias were inserted into the two outer parts. In the central part there is a beautiful portal.

In the interior, pillars subdivide the three naves. The pulpit is of historical and artistic value . It was reassembled in the first half of the last century from the various elements that were either bricked up for later reuse or scattered in the episcopes. It is made of marble slabs with reliefs in Romanesque style depicting a series of biblical episodes about the coming of Christ; only the pillars are modern.

In the choir is the high altar, which rests on the sarcophagus of Bishop St. Fortunato; behind it is the eighteenth-century wooden choir stalls. On the reverse is the painting by Sebastiano Ceccarini (1750) depicting Mary taken into heaven . On the sides there are windows depicting the patron saints of the Bishops of Fano: Paterniano, Eusebio, Orso and Fortunato.

Of the six side chapels , the more splendid Nolfi Chapel is important, named after the noble Fanoese Nolfi family. It was built in the early 17th century in a lush baroque decoration and shows important paintings by Domenichino depicting episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary . Ippolito Aldobrandini, later Pope Clement VIII (1592-1605), was baptized on March 4, 1536 in the baptistery .
