Andrzej Rudziński

Andrzej Rudziński (born November 10, 1910 in Włocławek , † November 27, 1980 in Warsaw ) was a Polish graphic artist and art teacher.

Rudziński grew up in Lodz and attended the State Teachers' College in Warsaw. He studied from 1929 to 1933 with Edward Butrymowicz and Wacław Radwan at the Municipal School for Decorative Arts and Painting and in 1934 became Radwan's assistant. He joined the Blok Zawodowych Artystów Plastyków and in 1937 became secretary of the board and member of the editorial board of the magazine Plastyka of this organization.

During the German occupation, Rudziński taught underground and joined underground military organizations. He became a soldier in the Polish Home Army and participated in the Warsaw Uprising as an adjutant to the commander of the Warsaw-Śródmieście district. Here he was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit with Swords of the Republic of Poland and three times the Cross of Valor.

After the war, Rudziński resumed teaching. From 1946 he was a professor and from 1947 director of the College of Fine Arts, taught printing techniques at the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Municipal Art School from 1946 to 1949 and headed the private graphics school of the Salesian Order from 1947 to 1949. From 1948 he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw . There he was initially a lecturer in printing techniques, from 1950 assistant professor in the book graphics department, from 1953 headed a book graphics studio as deputy professor, became associate professor in 1956 and full professor in 1971. During this time he worked as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Graphic Art, Head of the Department of Graphics at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Painting and Sculpture and Head of the Department of Graphic Design at the Faculty of Graphics.

As a graphic artist, Rudziński was active in the field of woodcuts before the war, most of the works from this period were lost during the war. After 1945 he turned to metal technology on the one hand, and graphic and editorial book design on the other. Here he worked with publishers such as Wydawnictwo Artystyczno-Graficzne (WAG), Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe (PWN), Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy (PIW), Książka i Wiedza and Sztuka , and was in charge of the Auriga publishing house from 1963 to 1968 visual artists ( Veit Stoss , Aleksander Gierymski , Stanisław Wyspiański , Stanisław Noakowski ) also present monumental editions in the field of astronomy and history.

In 1957 Rudziński had solo exhibitions in the Centers for Polish Culture in Prague and Berlin and in the Silesian Museum in Wroclaw. Among other things, he received the first prize at the 4th National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1954 and the gold medal at the International Art Exhibition "Premio Suzzara" in Suzzara (Italy), and in 1956 the prize at the 1st National Exhibition of Graphics and Drawing in Warsaw and the second prize at the international exhibition for graphics and drawing "Bianco e Nero" in Lugano, 1962 the prize at the world art exhibition in London and 1964 the third prize at the 3rd Graphic Biennale in Krakow. At the international book exhibitions in Leipzig and Moscow in 1965/71 he received several medals and diplomas for his editorial work. In 1978 he was awarded the First Prize of the Polish Minister for Culture and Art for special achievements in the didactic-pedagogical and artistic field.
