Aleksander Gierymski , actually Ignacy Aleksander Gierymski (born January 30, 1850 in Warsaw , † between March 6 and March 8, 1901 in Rome ) was a Polish painter and a younger brother of Maksymilian Gierymski .

Life

After graduating from high school in Warsaw, Gierymski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1868 to 1872 . His diploma thesis “The Merchant of Venice” was awarded a gold medal. Gierymski spent the years 1873–1874 in Italy , mainly in Rome. It was there that his early pictures were taken: “Roman Inn” and “Mora Player”, which he successfully exhibited in Warsaw.

From 1875 to 1879 Gierymski worked again in Rome. His pictures flooded with light at the time resemble those of the French Impressionists, although Gierymski was not yet familiar with their work.

Gierymski spent the years 1879–1888 in Warsaw, where his best works were created, such as “The Jewess with Oranges”, “Sand Graves”, “The Trumpet Festival”. These socially critical images were not recognized by the Warsaw public. Tired, he left Warsaw in 1888 and emigrated to Germany and France.

Back then he created many nocturnal cityscapes.

1893–1895 he came to Cracow where he negotiated a professorship at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts. At that time the picture "The farmer's coffin" was created.

Gierymski spent the last years of his life in Italy. There he died insane.
