Maksymilian Dionizy Gierymski (born October 15, 1846 in Warsaw , † September 16, 1874 in Reichenhall ), stage name Maximilian Gierymski , was a Polish painter and draftsman, brother of Aleksander Gierymski .

life and work

Gierymski started out as a mechanic and later attended the university in his native Warsaw, where he was a student of Rafał Hadziewicz . He took part in the Polish uprising in 1863/64.

At the instigation of the Russian governor and commander-in-chief in Warsaw, General Graf Berg, he finally devoted himself from 1867 to studying painting under Alexander von Wagner , Franz Adam and Eduard Schleich the Elder at the Art Academy in Munich . Ä.

Influenced by the latter, he treated the soldier genre in connection with a richly developed landscape and he had already created several paintings with figures in costumes from the 18th century, which testified to great talent. He became one of the leading artists at the Munich School of Naturalists. He created numerous romantic paintings depicting his Polish homeland. His rococo hunting scenes were famous . a. in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin and in the Philadelphia Museum of Art . He died of tuberculosis in Reichenhall as early as 1874; the disease had severely affected his work for years.

His brother Aleksander Gierymski (1850–1901) was also a well-known painter.
