Rafał Hadziewicz

Rafał Hadziewicz (born October 13, 1803 in Zamch , † September 7, 1883 in Kielce ) was a Polish history and icon painter.

Life

Hadziewicz was born in Zamch. From 1816 to 1822 he attended art school. In 1822 he studied at the Warsaw University a . a. with the famous painters Anton Blank and Antoni Brodowski . After receiving a scholarship, he traveled to Dresden in 1829 and later to Paris , where he studied at the famous French School of Painting. In 1831 he continued his studies in Rome . He stayed in Rome for self-study of the masters. During this time he drew many well-preserved drawings.

In 1834 he went to Krakow and painted some icons for the Orthodox churches there. In 1839 he left Cracow and went to Moscow , where he headed the Department of Fine Arts and Mathematics until 1844. In that year he returned to Warsaw , where he was professor at the Warsaw Art School . At the end of his life, in 1871, he was to take up a new position at the University of Kielce.

Five weeks before his 80th birthday, Hadziewicz died on September 7, 1883 in Kielce and found his final resting place in the Powązki cemetery in Warsaw .

reception

Hadziewicz painted countless religious images and portraits, but he was also known for his historical paintings, which are often compared to the Italian Renaissance and European Baroque.
