Early years and development

Adelcrantz was born in Stockholm in 1716 as the son of the architect Göran Josuae Adelcrantz (1668–1739), who five years earlier had changed his name from Törnqvist to Adelcrantz when he was raised to the nobility. As a student in Uppsala, Göran Josua Törnqvist was a member of the student theater group Den Swänska Theaters , which later performed at Lejonkulan in Stockholm. In 1697, when the disastrous fire in Stockholm Castle occurred and planning for the New Palace began, he entered the service of Nicodemus Tessin the Younger . Törnqvist had previously studied architecture and could have been discovered by Ticino for its scenography . Göran Josua Adelcrantz, however, remained in the shadow of the dominant Ticino. His most important work is the dome of St. Catherine's Church in Stockholm.

Through his marriage to the young widow Anna Maria Köhnmann , daughter of a wealthy trader, Törnqvist's financial situation improved considerably. Among other things, Signhildsberg Castle near Sigtuna came into his possession. In the following year he was ennobled by Charles XII on the recommendation of his mentor Ticino. Carl Fredrik, who was born in Stockholm, was the couple's third child. Following his father's wishes, Carl Fredrik initially pursued a civil service career. After the death of his father in 1739, however, he went on a four-year study trip to France and Italy .

Career as an architect

Coming back from the study trip, Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz was employed in the construction of the royal palace in Stockholm, on whose completion according to the plans of the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. J. he was involved under the construction management of Carl Hårleman . In the following decades, Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz made a steep career. In 1757 he was u. a. Oberintendent (boss) of the building authority, in the same year he was appointed president of the drawing academy (today art academy) and in 1766 he was raised to the baron status.

During the reign of Gustav III. He led several castle projects, including the radical renovation of the Ekolsund and Fredrikshov castles . But his main work is the Royal Swedish Opera House (1775-1782) and the theater (1762-66) and Chinese palace ( Kina Slott , 1764-66) in Drottningholm in the Rococo style . These two buildings led in 1991 to accommodate Drottningholm Palace in the World Heritage Site of UNESCO . The only church he designed is the neoclassical Adolf-Friedrich-Kirche (Adolf-Fredriks-Kyrka) in Stockholm (1768–83) with details in the Rococo.

Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz is considered one of the most important Swedish architects of the second half of the 18th century, who, through his long work, embodied two architectural ideals of this period: Rococo and the Swedish -style classicism, based on the French Louis-Seize style, known as the Gustavian style , of which he is one of the main representatives.
