Nicodemus Tessin the Younger
Count Nicodemus Tessin the Younger (born May 23, 1654 in Nyköping , † April 10, 1728 Stockholm ) was one of Sweden's most important architects around 1700 . He was the son of the Swedish court architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, who immigrated from Stralsund in Western Pomerania, and Maria Svan, the daughter of the mayor of Västerås. Nicodemus Tessin the Younger was court architect from 1676, Stockholm city architect from 1682 to 1715 and royal councilor from 1712 . His son Count Carl Gustaf Tessin was one of the most influential Swedish politicians of his time.
biography
After initial training from his father, Nicodemus the Younger began studying architecture in Rome (1673–1678) as a pupil of Gian Lorenzo Bernini . He then went on trips through Europe, where he was influenced in France by garden architecture , especially by André Le Nôtre .
Following these study trips, he was employed by the Swedish queen widow Hedwig Eleonora as an architect at her court in 1680. After the death of his father in 1681 he took over the work at Drottningholm Palace and devoted himself mainly to the palace church and the French park. Other projects of his father that he realized were the König-Karls-Kirche in Kungsör and the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in Karlskrona . For his wife and himself he built a city palace in Stockholm, the Tessinska palatset . In Steninge Castle in Uppland , he implemented the architectural integration of the garden into the castle complex in the Baroque style through terraces, open stairs, pavilions and others. In 1697 he was responsible for the planning and implementation of the funeral ceremonies of the late King Charles XI. responsible.
The high point of his career as an architect, however, was the construction of the Stockholm Palace , which was built in place of the Tre Kronor Palace , which burned down in 1697 .
Increases in office and rank were an expression of the esteem of the court and the high nobility. So in 1697 he became chief intendant of all royal palaces, houses, buildings and gardens. In 1699 he was made baron and in 1714 count.
His late work is the Friedrichskirche in Karlskrona.
Nicodemus Tessin the Elder J. was also politically active and towards the end of his life devoted himself mainly to politics. Due to political differences with King Friedrich I, he resigned from all offices a year before his death.
In 1951, in Vienna- Favoriten (10th district), Tessingasse was named after Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and his father.
