The castle Tre Kronor was a castle, the Birger Jarl in the center of the mid-13th century Stockholm had to create. It stood where the Stockholm Palace is today and consisted of a stronghold and a walled farmyard.

The name Tre Kronor (Three Crowns) probably dates from the middle of the 14th century, when Magnus II ruled. After Gustav Wasa had released Sweden from the Kalmar Union in 1521 , he made the castle the royal headquarters and provided it with additional defenses. Under his son Johann III. the castle was converted into a renaissance castle with a castle church.

On May 7th, July / May 17, 1697 greg. the castle was almost completely destroyed in a devastating fire. The architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder J. , who had already made some changes to the old castle shortly before, was commissioned to build the new Stockholm castle in the same place .
