Georg Gessner (actually Georg Geßner , also Johann Georg Gessner ; born March 16, 1765 in Dübendorf ; † July 28, 1843 in Zurich ) was a Swiss Reformed theologian , hymn poet and clergyman .

Life

Gessner was the son of a clergyman and studied at the Collegium Carolinum Zurich , among others under Johann Jakob Hottinger and Johann Jakob Steinbrüchel . His ordination as a clergyman took place in 1787, after which he initially worked as a clergyman in his home town. In 1791 he came to the orphanage in Zurich as a deacon , where he was promoted to pastor in 1794. In 1795 he moved to the Fraumünster in Zurich as a deacon , where he rose to pastor in 1799.

In 1799, in addition to his work as a clergyman, Gessner also became a professor of practical theology. After initially giving private lectures in this field, he became the first professor in practical theology at the college. In 1828 he rose to the position of Antistes of the Zurich Church and became pastor at the Grossmünster . In addition, he was active as the head of the school and education council. In 1837 he retired .

Gessner was one of the founders of the Zurich Bible Society in 1812 and of the Mission Society in 1819 . He was also close to the revival movement .
