Johann Jakob Steinbrüchel
Johann Jakob Steinbrüchel (also Johann Jacob Steinbrüchel ; born May 23, 1729 in Schönholzerswilen ; † March 23, 1796 in Zurich ) was a Swiss Reformed theologian , pastor and classical philologist .
Life
Steinbrüchel was the son of a pastor of the same name. After spending his childhood in the country, he came to study at the Collegium Carolinum Zurich . There he was mainly under the influence of Johann Jakob Breitinger . In 1751 he was ordained . He then went into the field service. His sermons attracted the interest of Christoph Martin Wieland , who was in Zurich in 1752. From Zurich he moved to Pinache . There he was pastor of the Waldensian parish .
Steinbrüchel returned to Zurich in 1756 and founded a private high school , of which he became the rector . This high school was very popular. Nevertheless, through the mediation of Breitinger, he accepted the professorship for Hebrew at the Collegium Humanatis in Zurich in 1763 , the professorship for eloquence in 1764 and the professorship for ancient languages in 1769.
Steinbrüchel received in 1776 a reputation as a professor of Greek and biblical hermeneutics to the Carolinum. There he succeeded his teacher Johann Jakob Breitinger and also took over his canonicals . He was a supporter of the Enlightenment and involved in the reorganization of the higher education system in Zurich. In addition, he is said to have understood how to promote talent, for example, he significantly supported the Enlightenment theologian Heinrich Corrodi .
