- January 7th : The opera La rencontre imprévue (The unexpected meeting) by Christoph Willibald Gluck has its world premiere at the Burgtheater in Vienna. It is considered the climax of Gluck's comic opera.
- February 11 : The opera Demofoonte by Niccolò Jommelli based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio has its world premiere at the Ducal Theater in Stuttgart.
- February 29 : Johann Christian Bach and Carl Friedrich Abel found the successful Bach-Abel Concerts in London , which were performed until 1781 .
- March 8th The comic opera Rose et Colas by Pierre-Alexandre Monsigny based on the libretto by Michel-Jean Sedaine has its world premiere at the Théâtre de l'Hôtel de Bourgogne in Paris.
- April 23rd : On their concert tour through Europe that began the previous year, Leopold Mozart and his two children Wolfgang and Nannerl come to London, where they meet Johann Christian Bach and make music with him. The four sonatas for piano and violin KV 6 to 9, composed in the same year, are Wolferl's first printed compositions.
- August 20 : The comic opera L'anneau perdu et retrouvé by Louis Claude Armand Chardin and Jean-Benjamin de Laborde premieres at the Théâtre de l'Hôtel de Bourgogne . The libretto is by Michel-Jean Sedaine .
