Johann Balthasar Christian Freislich (also Freißlich, Fraißlich, baptized on March 30, 1687 in Immelborn near Bad Salzungen , † April 17, 1764 in Danzig ) was a German composer and organist .

Live and act

Johann Balthasar Freislich, son of a pastor, probably received his musical training at the court of Saxony-Meiningen . The court orchestra there was under the direction of Georg Caspar Schürmann at that time . From 1709, Freislich studied in Jena . In 1714 he got a job as court organist with the Prince of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen , where he also had to do school service, in 1716 he was appointed court conductor. His employer sent him to Dresden for a year to learn how to play the newly developed Pantaleon at Pantaleon Hebenstreit .

From 1731, until his death, Freislich succeeded his half-brother Maximilian Dietrich Freislich , Kapellmeister at the Marienkirche , the main church in Danzig. Freislich is considered to be one of Johann Gottlieb Goldberg's teachers . His son-in-law Christian Friedrich Morheim (1719–1780), a student of Johann Sebastian Bach , was his successor at the Marienkirche .

Freislich composed numerous secular and ecclesiastical cantatas , passions such as the Brockes Passion and a stage work, the lost opera Die verliebte Nun . Of most of the cantatas only the texts have survived. We know of a single, lost instrumental work, a sonata for violin and harpsichord, which was listed in the Breitkopf & Härtel catalog in the second half of the 18th century .

The larger works written for St. Mary's Church in Gdańsk are characterized by a splendid and monumental style. Similar to his predecessor Johann Valentin Meder , he worked with the use of two choirs. Veronika Skuplik found the facsimiles of the cantatas I want to praise the Lord at all times and Fear not, I'm with you in the Danzig library and made material from them for a performance on September 20, 2015 in the Ansgari Church in Oldenburg.
