János Lavotta
János Lavotta [ ˈjaːnoʃ ˈlɒvotːɒ ] (born July 5, 1764 in Pusztafödémes , † August 11, 1820 in Tállya ) was a Hungarian violinist and composer .
Life
János Lavotta, son of a noble Hungarian civil servant family, began studying law in Pressburg and Budapest , and while in Vienna in 1786 he turned more and more to playing the violin and composing. In 1792 and 1793 he was theater music director in Budapest. In 1797 he lived in Miskolc for a short time and then traveled through Hungary as a violin virtuoso for a while. From 1802 to 1804 he was the conductor of the Hungarian theater in Cluj-Napoca . From 1816 he lived as a music dealer in Debrecen .
Along with Antal Csermák and János Bihari, Lavotta is one of the main representatives of Verbunkos music. In addition to verbunkos, he composed polonaises and minuets for strings as well as piano works.
The composer Ferenc Farkas created a musical monument for his compatriot in 1967 with his “Lavottiana” for wind quintet.
