Alexander Campbell (born February 22, 1764 in Tabea on Loch Lubnaig , † May 15, 1824 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish musician , writer , collector and arranger of Scottish and English folk songs.

life and work

Campbell came from a carpenter's house. His father died when Campbell was 11 years old. His eldest brother took care of the family and provided him with an excellent music education. This enabled him to take up the position of organist in an episcopal chapel in Edinburgh. During this time Campbell also gave music lessons. Among his students was the writer Walter Scott .

Campbell eventually turned away from music. After a soon abandoned medical school at Edinburgh University, he turned to writing. He wrote mainly works on the cultural history of Scotland.

For Albyn's Anthology , his collection of Scottish and English folk songs, the Highland Society granted him a scholarship through Walter Scott. Campbell covered between eleven and twelve hundred miles in Scotland and England gathering materials for this folk song collection.

In the last few years of his life, Campbell fell into great poverty and made a living copying manuscripts for his former student, Walter Scott.
