from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Schiffner (Czech Jindřich Schiffner , born May 28, 1853 in Cvikov (then Zwickau), Northern Bohemia , Austria-Hungary ; † March 7, 1938 in Cvikov, Czechoslovakia ) was an organ builder of German origin in Bohemia.

Life

His father Ignaz Schiffner was a master carpenter in Zwickau (Cvikov) in northern Bohemia. In 1864 Heinrich went to his brother in Prague at the request of his parents and attended a school there. In 1868/1869 he graduated from an organist school. From around 1869 he learned organ building from his brother Karl. He then went on a hike, including to Friedrich Ladegast in Weißenfels and to Kreutzbach in Borna in Saxony. In 1876 he returned to Bohemia and in 1876 opened his own organ building workshop in Česká Lípa (then Bohemian Leipa).

In 1889 Heinrich Schiffner took over his brother's workshop in Smíchov near Prague. He expanded production and by 1900 was the most productive organ builder in the Prague area with up to 30 employees. In 1916 he had to sell the company to Josef Růžička because of financial problems. Around 800 organs had been new or rebuilt by the company by this time.

In 1918 Schiffner went back to his hometown Cvikov in Northern Bohemia and made minor organ repairs from there. In 1938 he died impoverished.

Heinrich Schiffner first built organs with mechanical cone chests . From around 1890 he used Barker levers in larger instruments . Since 1896 he built pneumatic organs. His membrane drawers were prone to errors.
