Jean-Claude Trial

Jean-Claude Trial (born December 13, 1732 in Avignon , † June 23, 1771 in Paris ) was a French violinist, composer and opera director.

Life

After studying music at Avignon Cathedral, Trial was appointed maître de musique at the Notre-Dame de Nazareth Cathedral in Vaison when he was only 12 years old . After a short time, Trial settled in Montpellier , where he perfected his violin playing and composition skills with a teacher named Garnier. During this time he composed motets and works for violin.

To get to know Jean-Philippe Rameau and to be taught by him, Trial traveled to Paris in 1740, where he became first violinist at the Opéra-Comique and first second violinist in the orchestra of the Prince de Bourbon-Conti , whose direction he was later able to take over.

From 1767 on, he directed the “Académie royale de musique”, the Paris Opera, together with Pierre Montan Berton . During this time the orchestra was enlarged and there were other structural changes. After only two years they had to cancel their contract, and Antoine Dauvergne was their successor .

The brother

His younger brother Antoine Trial (1737–1795) was a renowned singer at the Comédie-Italienne , who turned to revolutionary politics from 1789 and fell out of favor with the audience. His second wife Jeanne-Marie Trial-Milon (1746-1818) was active as a soprano on Parisian stages, several composers, especially André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry , composed several arias especially for her voice.
