Life

Parini showed unusual talents early on and initially devoted himself to the study of theology , but, partly paralyzed by a serious illness, had to forego the spiritual profession and therefore turned to literature.

After his first poetic works had remained largely unnoticed, he appeared in 1763 with a didactic-satirical poem: Il mattino , which established his fame. Two years later, Il mezzogiorno followed ; but only after his death were Il Vespro and La notte made known.

These four poems, in which the idle, frivolous and vicious life of the Milanese nobility is scourged with the finest irony, thus form a whole under the common title: Il giorno and are among the most excellent of modern Italian literature.

The Milanese aristocracy felt deeply hurt by this, and Parini would have faced serious persecution if he had not found a protector in the Austrian governor of Lombardy , Count Karl Joseph Firmian .

This transferred the editing of the Gazzetta milanese to him and appointed him professor of poetry and eloquence at the Palatine School in Milan and after the same in 1769 as a teacher at the grammar school of the Brera . He later became director of this institution.

After the French invasion Parini became a member of the Milan municipality, but lost this office after the return of the Austrians.

Tellingly wit and irony, original fantasy, blooming, powerful style and a masterful versification ( versification ) characterize his main work. Some of his other poems are far behind him, and only among his odes are some excellent ones. The Giorno has been printed very often.

His hometown Bosisio was renamed Bosisio Parini in honor of the poet .
