Karl Joseph von Firmian

Karl Joseph Gotthard von Firmian , Italian Carlo Gottardo Firmian (born August 6, 1716 in Mezzocorona near Trento, then Tyrol , † July 20, 1782 in Milan ) was a South Tyrolean nobleman, art collector and politician as well as the Austrian Governor General of Lombardy.

Carl Joseph Graf von Firmian, from the Tyrolean noble family of Firmian and nephew of Salzburg Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian , received his education in Ettal , Innsbruck, Salzburg and at the University of Leiden , then on trips to France and Italy.

After the accession of Francis I , he returned to Germany and was designed by Maria Theresa in 1753 Austrian ambassador to Naples and in 1756 as minister plenipotentiary in the Lombardy sent. In this Habsburg duchy, which has been in existence since 1535, Firmian succeeded in compromising with young reformers an administrative reform that was mediated by the Viennese diplomat Joseph von Sperges . As a man of the Enlightenment he pushed back the spiritual influence, built libraries and promoted science and the arts, so as a patron and friend of Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Angelika Kauffmann .

Firmian died on July 20, 1782 in Milan and was buried in the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo . He left behind a library of 40,000 volumes and valuable art collections.
