Bernard MacLaverty
Bernard MacLaverty (born September 14, 1942 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish author who wrote the novels Lamb (1980), Cal (1983) and Grace Notes (1997).
Life
MacLaverty worked at Queen's University in Belfast as a laboratory technician in the anatomy department until he quit his job at the age of 28 to study English literature at that university. After successfully completing his studies, he became a teacher and moved to Scotland , where he worked at various schools in Glasgow and Edinburgh until 1981, after which he devoted himself exclusively to writing books.
MacLaverty began to write at the age of 19, but his big breakthrough didn't come until 1977 with the collection of short stories Secrets & Other Stories . Some of the main focuses of his books are love and family relationships, especially the father-son relationship. His own father died when Bernard MacLaverty was 12 years old.
He lived for some time on the Scottish island of Islay ; since 1975 he has lived in Glasgow again with his wife and four children.
His books Cal and Lamb were made into films. In addition MacLaverty is also a screenwriter working and was himself director of a Scottish BAFTA Award ( Best First Time Director excellent) short film Bye-Child (2003).
For Midwinter Break ( Snow in Amsterdam ) MacLaverty 2017 received the Irish Book Award in the category “Novel of the Year”.
