Marian Keyes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mary Catherine "Marian" Keyes (born September 10, 1963 in Limerick , Ireland ) is an Irish author. Along with Helen Fielding, she is considered to be the co-founder of a new generation of women’s novels, which are pejoratively referred to as chick lit in English and are aimed primarily at young, working single women.

Life

Keyes grew up in Dublin as the oldest of five children . She graduated from University College Dublin with a law degree and then went to London , where she first worked as a waitress and later as an office worker. During this time she began writing short stories and sent the manuscript to a publisher with the (untrue) claim that she was also working on a novel. The publisher did not want to publish a short story collection by an unknown author, but showed interest in the novel. So in a few weeks Keyes wrote her first novel Watermelon , which was also her breakthrough as a writer. After this initial success, further novels and two short story collections from her pen appeared. Her books have a total circulation of 15 million and have been translated into 30 languages. A television series, a television film and a French cinema film are based on her books.

Marian Keyes is a dry alcoholic and has dealt with this topic in her books. She also struggles with depression, which she talks about freely. In her book Glück ist backbar (2012), enriched with recipes , she explains that baking saved her life. For Making It Up As I Go Along , Keyes received the Irish Book Award in 2016 in the “Popular Non-Fiction Book of the Year” category; for The Break she received the same award in 2017 in the category “Popular Fiction Book of the Year”.

She has lived in Dublin with her husband since 1997.
