Since 1988 he has been professor for modern German studies and media analysis at the University of Mannheim . In May 2018 he gave his farewell lecture on the subject of “Goethe's Faust or The Ir / Rationality of Science”. As part of his teaching activities, he regularly offered a seminar on current productions at the Mannheim National Theater in cooperation with the Mannheim National Theater . The main focus of his scientific and journalistic activities concern the diverse dimensions of "understanding" every type of media, starting with texts in books up to the new media . Hörisch asks questions about the function of the media in the same way when it comes to objects such as bread and wine (as the media of the Lord's Supper ) or money (as a medium of barter).

His scientific publications are supplemented by extensive and regular public appearances. On these occasions Jochen Hörisch often deals with other areas from his spectrum of interests, such as B. Questions of the history of philosophy and musical topics, such as the work of Richard Wagner . He also commented on the Münkler Watch blog and described this form of criticism of a university professor as an “absurd event”. In the Nordwestradio he always looks at the media events of the previous week in the column “Das Medienecho” on Mondays.

In connection with a review of his book The Knowledge of Literature by Burkhard Müller in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, there was a publicly documented argument between the author and his critic in Perlentaucher .

In 2000, Hörisch received the Aby Warburg Foundation's Science Prize . In 2010 he founded the Deutsche Tilgungsinitiative with Alexander Dill , with Hörisch being the first Tilger.
