Elba is a city in Coffee County in the US state Alabama with 4185 inhabitants (as of 2000). The place is together with Enterprise administrative seat ( county seat ) of the county.

geography

Elba lies in the basin of the Pea River at its junction with Whitewater Creek. Regular floods from the river mark the history of the city.

history

The first settlement took place in the 1830s when a ferry to cross the Pea River began operating. At that time the place was called Bridegeville , from 1850 the name was Bentonville , based on the politician Thomas Hart Benton . After the residents had decided to rename the place, the suggestions of the community members were pulled out of a hat on December 8, 1851. The successful proposal "Elba" referred to the island to which Napoléon Bonaparte was temporarily exiled.

In 1852 Elba was selected as the administrative seat of Coffee County, at the same time the location was relocated from the immediate vicinity of the river to its current location. The first public school was built in 1863, and in 1892 the town was connected to a railway that lasted until 1984.

Throughout its history, the city has been inundated by the floods of Whitewater Creek and Pea River. In 1865 the city was destroyed by floods, and other severe floods occurred in 1929 and 1990.

Two structures and sites in Elba are on the National Register of Historic Places , the Coffee County Courthouse and the Pea River Power Company Hydroelectric Facility (as of July 11, 2019).
