Welcome to Night Vale ( dt. "Welcome to Night Vale") is an American podcast from the Mystery genre of which exists since 2012. The podcast is presented as a local radio show from the fictional Night Vale , a desert town somewhere in the southwest of the USA . New episodes appear every two weeks, most episodes are 20 to 30 minutes long.

Content and production

In Night Vale, conspiracy theories are an integral part of reality. The subtle joke of the series arises from the leisurely tone à la Prairie Home Companion , the unfiltered banality of an open channel , mixed with unbelievable and threatening incidents that are reminiscent of the X-Files or Stranger Things .

The Welcome to Night Vale podcast can be understood as a long narrative (“long-form storytelling”). It is true that individual episodes can be heard on their own and only rarely contain significant developments that the listener might need to understand later. However, the series is connected by running gags full of black humor and tension arcs over several episodes. An example of such a running gag is the recurring appearance of the Glow Cloud , a colored, glowing poison gas cloud. The development of a romantic relationship between the main characters Cecil and Carlos forms one of the most important arcs of tension.

The speaker for the podcast is Cecil Baldwin. Each episode of the podcast contains a piece of music from the independent area, which is announced as a weather report . The title melody and background music for the podcast was composed and recorded by the musician Disparition from Brooklyn .

Welcome to Night Vale was created in 2012 by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor , who are joint authors of the podcast and the spin-off novels. Night Vale is also economically in their hands through the jointly held production company Nightvale presents .

Novels

In 2015, Fink and Cranor published a novel called Welcome to Night Vale . Although the title is identical to the podcast, it is not an expanded transcript , but an independent work in the world of Night Vale. The novel is written from the alternating perspective of Jackie Fierro and Diane Crayton, both residents of Night Vale who appeared on the podcast. In 2016 the novel was published in German by Klett-Cotta .

In 2017, Fink and Cranor published another novel called It Devours! wearing.
