Ted Simon

Ted Simon (* 1931 ) is a journalist and adventurer. He was born in Germany as the son of a German communist and a Romanian Jew.

Career

As a journalist he worked for the Daily Mail , The Observer and The Times, among others .

His motorcycle rides

In 1973 he set out on a four-year circumnavigation of the world on his Triumph Tiger 100 motorcycle . During this time, he traveled through 45 countries and covered over 125,000 kilometers .

Jupiter's Journey , his 1979 book about these experiences, became an international bestseller with well over 400,000 copies and made Ted Simon a cult figure. With the book Riding High , the second part about his journey, he closed some of the gaps in the first book.

In 2001, at the age of 70, he again circled the globe on his converted BMW R 80 GS , crossed Europe, traveled from Tunis to the Cape of Good Hope , crossed to Brazil and drove through North America . He explored New Zealand and Australia and returned to Europe via the Asian continent after two and a half years on the road . He covered 95,000 km in 48 countries. He describes the experiences of this second trip in his book Jupiter's Dreams .

He also wrote the book The Gypsy in Me , which is about finding his parents' roots in Eastern Europe; In 2007 his latest work was published about his motorcycle rides: Jupiter's Dreams .

His book Jupiter's Ride inspired actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman to travel Long Way Round from London to New York City on motorcycles, on which they met Ted in Mongolia .

Ted Simon now lives in London and northern California , where he grows organic products on a farm .
