Hanya Yanagihara
Hanya Yanagihara (born September 20, 1974 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American journalist and writer .
Life
Yanagihara grew up in Hawaii . Her father is a native Hawaiian of Japanese descent, her mother a native South Korean, but who also grew up in Hawaii. As a teenager, she also spent many years in Maryland and Texas due to her father's career .
After graduating from Smith College in Northampton in 1995 , Yanagihara initially worked as an editor for the travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler before becoming assistant editor of the weekend supplement T: The New York Times Style Magazine for The New York Times .
Yanagiharas first novel, The People in the Trees (dt. The people of the trees ) was published in 2013 and deals with the life and the abuse scandal at the US virologist and Nobel laureate Daniel Carleton Gajdusek . It was translated into German after the great success of her second novel.
In 2015 she published her second novel A Little Life , which also dealt with sexual abuse and its consequences and was published in German in 2017. A Little Life was shortlisted for the British Booker Prize (2015) and the International DUBLIN Literary Award (2017). It is described as "... one of the best-selling and most discussed literary works of recent years".
Yanagihara currently lives and works in New York .
