Michael Martin (born July 14, 1963 in Gersthofen ) is a German photographer and author .

career

Michael Martin studied geography , ethnology and political science in Munich and is a qualified geographer .

Within three decades he made over eighty trips to the deserts of Africa , published 15 illustrated books and gave over 1700 slide presentations throughout the German-speaking area. He is the director of the Gesellschaft für Bild und Vortrag eV (GBV), a professional association for slide speakers whose aim is to promote the medium of slide presentations and cooperation between speakers and organizers.

In 1999 Michael Martin made the decision to make the deserts of the earth his subject. Within five years he and his then partner Elke Wallner crossed all the deserts of the earth - on all continents and in almost fifty countries.

Highlights of his work as a desert photographer and speaker include his appearances at the Royal Geographical Society , which awarded him the Cherry Kearton Award in June 2005 , and his presentation at the UN Climate Change Conference in December 2005. He is a supporter of UN refugee aid . He has been reporting regularly in words and pictures about his travels for Spiegel Online since 2010.

His book Planet Desert was named Knowledge Book of the Year in 2016.

Michael Martin lives in Pasing and Markdorf and has two grown children.
