The UN refugee aid e. V. is a German association based in Bonn . It is the German partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR . Since 1980, UN Refugee Aid has been a non-profit organization for people on the move worldwide and supports refugee projects in Germany.

history

The association was founded as the German Foundation for UN Refugee Aid in Bonn in 1980. A call by the UNHCR ( United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ) for refugees in Somalia was the starting point. As an international organization, the UNHCR cannot accept tax-privileged donations in Germany. Establishing as an association, which was then recognized as a non-profit, solved the problem. In the first few years the association's work was done entirely on a voluntary basis. With increasing financial resources, an office with full-time employees was set up. In 2004 the association was renamed UNO-Refugee Aid eV. In addition, a foundation was established, the UN Refugee Aid Foundation, in order to secure the work of the NGO to support refugees in the long term.

aims

It is the aim of the NGO to protect the lives of refugees and to contribute to the fact that refugees can lead a decent life and can take their fate into their own hands again.

(1) Mobilizing civil society to provide financial support for UNHCR's worldwide life-saving operations is one of the key tasks. (2) In addition, projects for refugees in Germany are financially supported. Here, the focus of project funding is on providing refugees with advice and support, e.g. B. in the areas of legal and asylum procedures or health promotion, to support in a self-determined life. Those in particular need of protection, such as women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities, are most severely affected by flight and displacement, which is why projects for this group of people and projects in structurally weak areas are given preference. (3) The task of UN Refugee Aid is also to provide information about flight, the fate of flight and the causes of flight and numerous public relations measures, e.g. B. mobilizing schools to help raise awareness among civil society.

Support for the UNHCR and projects in Germany

Contributions from members, but in particular donations from civil society from individuals and companies, made it possible in 2017 to support the work of the UNHCR with 21 million euros and projects for refugees in Germany with 1 million euros. The NGO has been awarded the DZI donation seal since 2003 . The association is also a member of the Transparent Civil Society initiative initiated by Transparency International Germany .
