Succession planning

Succession planning is a human resources tool and aims to ensure that management positions are followed, mostly at higher management levels.

Early forms of succession planning essentially comprised lists of potential successors for specific positions.

Modern forms of succession planning and management consist of a series of measures that build on one another. First of all, this includes the identification of key positions . With the help of the risk assessment, an attempt is made to estimate the probability for each key position with which it could become vacant in a certain period of time (due to fluctuation, retirement, etc.). As part of an internal talent identification process, employees are identified who have long-term potential to successfully fill key positions. The candidates identified in this way are then prepared for key positions within the framework of targeted personnel development measures.

Modern approaches encompass an even wider range of measures. In this respect, ideas of succession planning are increasingly taken into account in the context of modern talent management .
