Jade Y. Chen

Jade Yuhui Chen ( Chinese  陈玉慧 ) (born July 8, 1957 in Taichung ) is a Taiwanese journalist and writer . In 2008 one of her novels , The Island of the Goddess , was published in German for the first time . Since the 1990s she has been commuting between her native Taiwan and her places of residence in Munich and Berlin.

Life

Jade Y. Chen was born in Taichung to a Taiwanese woman and a Chinese soldier. Her family lived in poor conditions. As a young woman, she turned against the patriarchal structures of her homeland and wanted to start a life of her own. She left Taiwan at the age of 21 to work as an assistant in Paris at the Théâtre du Soleil , among others with Ariane Mnouchkine . In 1984 and 1985 she attended the acting school of Jaques Lecoq in Paris, 1986–1988 she studied history at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. In 1988 she completed this course with a master's degree . From 1992–1993, Chen received a scholarship for the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. From 1995 to 1997 she continued her studies and graduated in literature.

Career

Jade Y. Chen began her professional career in 1978 as a freelancer for the China Times Weekly newspaper . In 1979 she gave up this position to become a correspondent for the China Times in New York from 1983 to 1984 . She spent the next ten years writing plays, as a director and as a choreographer for theater, operas and ballets in Paris, New York (at the La MaMa Theater) and Taipei . In addition, she worked for a year as a teacher at the Chinese University of Culture in Taipei, but left Taipei to work in Paris as an author, journalist and translator for the Europe Journal . In 1990 she resumed her work as a teacher at the university for a year. Since 1992 she has written several columns for Performance Art Magazine and various Chinese newspapers . In the same year, Chen became a freelance correspondent for Germany and Europe for the Taiwanese newspaper United Daily News .

Most recently she received numerous awards for her novel The Sea God Family , which was also adapted for the stage and performed in Taipei in 2009.
