Mathias Énard
Mathias Énard (born January 11, 1972 in Niort , Deux-Sèvres , France ) is a French writer and translator .
Life
Énard studied the Arabic and Persian languages at the Institut national des langues et civilizations orientales (INALCO) in Paris . After lengthy stays in the Middle East , including three years in Damascus , two years in Beirut and one year in Tehran , he went to Barcelona in 2000 . There he worked for various cultural magazines. He was also a member of the editorial board of the French magazine for literature and philosophy Inculte . From 2010 he taught Arabic at the Autonomous University of Barcelona .
In 2005/2006, Énard was a fellow at the Villa Medici in Rome . In 2011 he founded the graphic edition scrawitch together with others in Paris . In 2013/14 he was a guest of the DAAD's Berlin artist program .
His novel Zone from 2008 is the inner monologue of a war veteran from the Yugoslavian War, which is 500 pages long in a single sentence without a period. The novel made him known internationally. After several awards for his novels, Énard received the most prestigious French literary prize for Boussole (German: Kompass ) in 2015 with the Prix Goncourt .
Énard lives in Barcelona.
In spring 2020 Mathias Énard was the holder of the Friedrich Dürrenmatt visiting professorship for world literature at the University of Bern .
