Johannes Jacobus "Joost" Zwagerman (born November 18, 1963 in Alkmaar , † September 8, 2015 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch writer , essayist and publicist .

Life and work

Zwagerman comes from a family of teachers and, after attending school, also aspired to become a teacher, studying Dutch language and literature on the side. In order to devote himself entirely to writing, he dropped out of college. He married a childhood friend and had three children with her. In 1989 he succeeded with Gimmik! - Circulation 200,000 - the breakthrough to a large reading public. De buitenvrouw was even more successful with a circulation of 300,000. Due to its popularity in the Netherlands, a large life insurer hired Zwagerman as an advertising medium. In 2003 and 2004 Zwagerman took over the moderation of the talk show Zomergasten .

In addition to narrative literature, Zwagerman published numerous essays on literature, pop music, photography, film and especially art. After the turn of the millennium, the topics of depression and suicide appeared several times in the publications (2002: Zes sterren ; 2003: Het vijfde seizoen , 2005: Door eigen hand. Zelfmoord en de nabestaanden ).

In January 2008, Joost Zwagerman received the Gouden Ganzenveer ("Golden Goose Feather") from the Academie De Gouden Ganzenveer for his work as an essayist, columnist and writer . According to the academy, his work stands out for its topicality and awareness of social phenomena. In 2010 he wrote the Dutch Boekenweek present with the novella Duel .

In 2011, his disaster year , Zwagerman's marriage broke up, resulting in severe clinical depression . Nevertheless, he was soon again writing about art in a large Dutch newspaper and was a frequent guest on talk shows, mostly on the subject. Zwagerman committed suicide in his home town of Haarlem on September 8, 2015 .

In an advertising text for Zwagerman's last volume of essays it can be read: Perhaps silence in art embodies the longing not to be anymore. This longing is Zwagerman's drive in 'The Silence of Light'.
