Stephen Clarke (born October 15, 1958 ) is a British author .

Before working as a writer, Clarke worked as a gag writer for BBC Radio 4 and as a copywriter for comic artist Gilbert Shelton . He moved to Paris in the early 1990s .

In 2004 he published the novel A Year in the Merde , which was published in Germany under the title Ein Engländer in Paris . The book, which targets the quirks of the French with British charm, turned out to be a great success and has been translated into 17 languages ​​to date. Clarke had originally printed out the manuscript 200 times for acquaintances and friends before it fell into the hands of an interested publisher. With the subject matter of his books, Clarke succeeds the similarly successful Pierre Daninos , the author of Major Thompson discovers the French .

In 2005, the bestseller Merde Actually (Eng. I am a Parisian ) followed, which pushed Harry Potter from number 1 on the bestseller list in Clarke's home country England and continued the story of A Year in the Merde . In 2007, Merde happens, the third sequel about the protagonist Paul West , which was translated into German in 2008 together with Talk to the Snail (German: Survival among the French ). The fourth volume in the Merde series followed in 2010, as well as the humorous history book Liberté, Egalité, Fritten zum Tee: Why the English invented France (“1000 Years Of Annoying The French”).
