Jacques Schols (born June 21, 1935 in Delft ; † December 30, 2016 in Epe (Netherlands) ) was a Dutch jazz bassist (double bass, also bass guitar). He was one of the most famous Dutch jazz bassists.
Live and act
Schols attended the Conservatory in The Hague from 1957 to 1960 . Schols played in the legendary hard bop combo “Diamond Five” by Cees Slinger in the 1950s ; he also accompanied Stéphane Grappelli . In the 1960s he played with the quartet of Misha Mengelberg (with whom he made the (before) last recording of Eric Dolphy in 1964) and Piet Noordijk and in the Big Band of Boy Edgar . He later worked a lot as an accompaniment rhythm section with drummer John Engels . From 1965 to 1967 he had his own quartet on VPRO radio with Cees Slinger, Ruud Brink and John Engels (a CD with recordings by VPRO was released in 2003). He and Engels played in a trio with pianist Louis van Dijk for many years. He can also be heard on albums by Herman Schoonderwalt , Piet Noordijk, Martine Bijl , Ben Webster , Dexter Gordon , Ferdinand Povel , Greetje Kauffeld , Johnny Meijer , Chris Hinze , Bud Freeman and Soesja Citroen .
Since 1997, as the successor to Marcel Thielemans, he has been director of the dance orchestra of the “ Ramblers ”, which - founded in 1926 - are in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest band in the world still playing. In 2005 he brought out the album Platina of the Ramblers for the 75th anniversary . In 2015 his time as musical director of the Ramblers ended. His successor as musical director was the drummer Cees Kranenburg . During his time with the Ramblers, he also played with his own quartet.
From 2011 he also belonged to the Bourgondisch Combo with the singer Tamara Hoekwater and the accordion player Cees Hamelink . The Combo is the house band of the Amsterdam Jazz Café of the Amsterdam Academisch Club , where they performed on the first Friday of each month. In 2014 they recorded the album Ik Zei Ja (with vocals in Dutch) in the Jazzcafé . In 2015 the Louis van Dijk Trio reunited on the occasion of John Engels' 80th birthday in the Bimhuis .
After Schools temporarily gave courses at the Conservatories of Zwolle, Groningen, Hilversum and Maastricht, he got a job at the Conservatory in The Hague in 1987.
